The Bash Brothers and the FCFL

Last night, mega-funny comedy trio The Lonely Island dropped a surprise special on Netflix, The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience. The concept, which is referred to as a “visual poem,” focuses on Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, who famously celebrated their home runs by bashing their forearms together and won the World Series with the Oakland A’s in 1989. With Andy Samberg (Canseco) and Akiva Schaffer (McGwire) constantly referencing the two’s steroid use, we were left in stitches.

Jose Canseco himself has already come out showing his support for the special, saying he couldn’t stop laughing. No word yet from McGwire, but we can think of one more person we’d like to hear from: FCFL Chief Operating Officer, Andy Dolich. Dolich worked his way up at the Oakland A’s from 1980-1995, giving him a front-row seat to the hey-day that inspired this out of left-field project. Even better, be sure to stick around for the credits so you can see our very own Chief Strategic Advisor, Joe Montana, portrayed by Jorma Taccone, the third member of The Lonely Island.

It should be noted that Canseco and McGwire’s gimmick of the ‘Monster Bash’ paved the road for t-shirts, banners, this poster, and a music video. The 1988 US Olympic team even adopted it as their own. We can only hope that the FCFL creates a similar cultural impact, but given the involvement of our amazing fans, we’re optimistic. Power to the fans!
